The Saturday Seminar on Home Education
presented by Gordon Neufeld and Tamara Strijack
Livestream Seminar on October 24, 2020
The pandemic has brought the issues of home education to the fore, not only for parents but for many teachers as well, especially those that serve both roles. Although the new health risks associated with schooling have resulted in home education being considered, many questions and concerns exist. What are the implications for learning, for socialization, for emotional health and well-being? What are the factors that should be taken into consideration when making the decision? What are the risks involved in home education and how should these be managed? What are the signs of a child in trouble, at school or at home? What if a child has no motivation to learn or has special needs? What should be the basic role of the parent in home education? How does school-led online learning differ from parent-led home education? Are there models of education that we should be aspiring to that brings in the best of both worlds? These questions – and many more – will be dealt with from an attachment-based developmental approach.
Dr. Neufeld has been sought as a resource for home educators for most of his professional career and was given the honour of delivering the keynote address at the first global conference on home education in Berlin in 2012. Tamara Strijack is the academic dean of the Neufeld Institute, in charge of all our courses. She is also Gordon’s daughter and has been a practitioner of home education through most of her daughters’ school years. She now serves as a consultant for both school-based educators and home-based educators.
If home education is being considered as an option, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to become more fully informed as to how to think about it as well as how to go about it should you decide to give this alternative a try.
